Charging lithium batteries safely, including overnight

Most battery fires start while a pack charges with nobody watching, not while the tool is in use. Overnight in the workshop, the warehouse or a hallway, the pack needs its own charging place, clear of anything that burns and clear of the escape route.

Damaged, swollen or noticeably warm batteries should not be reused and should be stored separately from unremarkable batteries until they have been professionally inspected or disposed of.

Whether and which specific requirements apply (e.g. from building codes, workplace safety regulations, occupational safety rules or building insurance) depends on the industry, building and insurer. This page does not replace individual legal or insurance advice — we recommend clarifying specific requirements with the responsible occupational safety officer, fire safety officer or your insurer.

An active battery fire protection box such as the Li-Ion Safety Box M from RUK-Technologies provides exactly that controlled charging place: monitored charging, automatic shutdown and suppression in a closed system — before thermal runaway spreads into the workshop or the hallway.
